Controlling & Preventing Mastitis
If you want to prevent or control mastitis make sure that you use a good milking procedure, clean environment, and fine tune your milking machines. You already know many ways to make sure that mastitis is not contracted or spread, such as cleaning the teats before and after milking. You will also need to scrap and clean the holding pens, feedlot and bar of manure at least twice a day. No manure should accumulate where youâre herd is being held. Make sure to change your bedding frequently as well, so a clean and dry layer of bedding should always be there. You will also need to make sure that you practice fly and insect control since they can harbor organisms that cause mastitis.
If you give them pasture access, you already know not to let them have access to streams of ponds. The dewclaw should also be trimmed when their feet are, and make sure that you donât leave harsh edges that could damage the cowâs udder. There are many dairy farmers that will singe the hair on the udder using a handheld propane torch to keep manure and dirt from accumulating. If you arenât milking your cows by hand and are instead using a milking machine, then make sure that itâs checked daily and serviced regularly. If you have rubber parts that are showing signs of wear, make sure to replace them quickly. The vacuum setting should be calibrated carefully, and make sure that your equipment is washed and sterilized immediately once your milking session is over. You already know about the treatment of mastitis, which can usually be done yourself but you can also get a veterinarian to do it.
