Will we remain silent again?

As Christians, we all carry a deadly DNA in us which we have to actively oppose. In the course of Church history guilt against the Jewish people has spread to the nations like a virus. The nature of antisemitism and Jew hatred has remained unchanged to this day. What will we do? Will we remain indifferent and silent again? Or are we hiding behind our many “Israel activities” without ever realizing the responsibility of our cities and nations? We will only be able to raise our voices once we are willing to humble ourselves before God and repent personally. Repentance means we become active and change our actions.

At the beginning of this book I had shared our city’s testimony. What we learned was that a thorough working through of one’s own family story in combination with the public statement for the Jewish roots of our Christian faith produces an authority for spiritual breakthroughs. Was it not precisely the experience of “unmerited grace” that was the prerequisite to bringing the message of healing and restoration in all humility to other nations? After all, was it legitimate for descendants of German perpetrators to help others, who themselves had fallen victim to National Socialism, recognize their own elements of antisemitic guilt?

We were witnesses of the unique opportunities afforded by the March of Life in this field. Whether it was in the United States, in Germany, or in other nations – the experience was the same everywhere. We are not finished yet with working through the past.

Every nation has its own identity and its own history. But there is something that we as Christians have in common, irrespective of which church tradition or denomination we are from: There is part of our history that we have never faced, the history of our silence towards the Jewish people, which is still troubling us today. It is time that we come before God with humble hearts and repent for the guilt of Christians in the history of our churches and denominations. It is time to break the Veil of Silence in our nations.
