CHAPTER 7

We got back to Diana's, and I immediately stripped her off and put her in the shower. She was covered in blood and forest debris, and she was shivering. I thought about trying to protect her modesty, but it seemed silly considering I'd see it all before.

"Here, sit on this stool under the water stream and warm up. I'll see to the others and come back, eh?"

She nodded wordlessly.

"Edward and Helena, go in the other bedroom and have a shower first. I'll make up the bed in the study for you, since you're a lot smaller than Torben. Serena, you and Torben can take the room when they're done. Hang out in here and help yourself to anything you want from the fridge. Jaci, are you all right?"

She nodded, looking rather numb.

Artem kissed her cheek. "I'm going to go home and get clothes for us all. I'll be back shortly."

I went to the linen closet to get out sheets and towels, and the powder room next to it, to show everyone where it was just in case.

"Serena, can you examine your sisters when everyone has showered, just to be on the safe side? And give the transfusions?"

"I've got my bag down in the car--"

"I'll go, Serena," Artem said. "I have to get the clothes anyway. I'll get it out of the trunk and bring it up when I come back, all right?"

She nodded.

Torben handed over the keys, and Artem disappeared.

The next tap at the door was Raphael with the blood, as promised.

Serena looked at him in surprise. "That was fast."

"She's an old friend."

"You must have got a taxi fast too."

"Oh er, yes."

Celeste had made herself useful by taking over making up the sofa bed. He went in to see her and help. Quite a useful vampire, I reflected. Very handy, I thought with a blush as I saw the two of them getting affectionate with one another.

Sheesh, and I thought I was living a double life as human and wolf. And I had to admit now, as helper to Artem and Michael.

For it had become clear to me in the forest that some of us knew some things, but not others. The key one being the existence of the magical realm, and all the different supernaturals living here in this world.

Since all of them were in the open plan sitting area at that point except Diana, I cleared my throat and said, "Can we have a chat, everyone, about what happened tonight?"

The girls shuddered.

"It was a terribly traumatic occurrence on what should have been a fun-filled evening. I'm sorry they were plotting and scheming against Artem, and that they hated the pups so much. That they detest refugees who have nowhere else to go because the, well, the magical realm is in such upheaval."

Everyone stared at me.

"Celeste, Raphael, stop me if I get anything wrong. The truth as I understand it is, the humans in that world, and in this, have been conspiring, I believe is the right word, to rid themselves of any, um, troublemakers.
