(Can I Survive the Church?)

A clever title can put a book on the bestseller list.

In the 1970s a writer named Fritz Ridenour wrote a book titled How to Be a Christian without Being Religious. The book became a bestseller, and I’m guessing the title had a lot to do with that. Isn’t that what we would all like—to be genuinely Christian without being stuffy and religious?

More recently, Diana Butler Bass has written a book titled Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening. I think that title has elicited a lot of interest as well. After all, who among us wouldn’t like to move beyond legalistic religion to have a new spiritual awakening? Who among us wouldn’t want to find a faith that goes beyond boring sermons and tired worship services? We would all like to find a Christianity after religion.

I can think of another book title that might capture the attention of a lot of modern readers: How to Be a Christian without Going to Church. I say that because more and more people are finding the church unattractive and opting to attend “Saint Mattress” on Sunday morning. A book suggesting that a person could be a legitimate Christian without having to attend church would probably find a large and receptive audience.
