Chapter 24

Green Light

__________

Two days later, an announcement woke the entire camp up. The Queen’s Mercy tournament was going to start this afternoon. I was so nervous I choked on the pure air. Tilly’s people hadn’t come to get me. Either she’d lied or the higher-ups hadn’t thought I should get out. When I put it in a perspective, it meant a simple truth, they wanted me dead. Since telling me about the true intent behind this tournament, my respect for the Shining Ones completely vanished. They were as bad as shifters. Except, shifters didn’t pretend to be righteous.

Igor and his miserable-looking friend cackled excitedly. I climbed down and found Lauren a little nervous. The other four druids who shared the tent with us kept to their own devices, not giving us insight into their emotions. Not that I wished to know them.

“What’s the matter?” It was my turn to inquire.

“It’s nothing. Just a bad feeling.” Yeah. Fuck. Thanks. My chest felt as if someone jumped on it, my throat dried up and she ‘just’ had a bad feeling. Did she know how much fuel it added to the fire? This wasn’t a very encouraging message. I didn’t press for more but my instinct nudged me to do so. And eventually, I relented and asked, “What’s going on?” Did Kix change his mind? If so I was screwed.

“It’s perhaps only my imagination.”

“Lauren,” I hissed, fighting depressive thoughts. My precious imagination was on fire today, it showed me Valiant who reached me as I sank to the bottom of the ocean. An amazing beginning

of the day.

“Just … I think I saw people watching our tent and tailing us yesterday. But that’s not possible. It’s my imagination.”

Hysterical Lauren made my hair stand on end. I’d have expected me to behave like this not her. She was level-headed and composed. I was … whatever, but not this, not a rational-thinking chick.

When they brought us food, a hidden message came with a plastic plate. Lauren read it and her face turned white like the paper I’d written on the information for Kix. I gently pulled the piece of paper from her hand but it turned to dust before I had a chance to read it.

“What happened?”

She slowly looked at me.

“Something’s up. Kix was tipped that people are watching you.”

A bottomless pit of desperation opened beneath me. Who was watching me? I put the plate away and strode outside. I needed to do something about it. Being warned, my senses picked a movement in the periphery. Some people vanished from the sight when I glanced at them. If Lauren hadn’t told me, I’d have ignored it as they weren’t that obvious. Was this Tilly? It had to be Shining Ones. Kix wouldn’t have sent a message if it was him.

“Get back inside, silly girl,” Lauren called after me. Did my behavior seem suspicious? Good. I wanted them to know that I knew. Angry, I entered the tent. My eyes jumped between the druids. What if one
