“The Staff and the Spell,” Ellie whispered, wide-eyed. She grabbed a copy and pulled over a stool to read.

The story was even better than what Mr. Soto had described. The Troll King, Princess Power’s way-bad archenemy, planned to hypnotize Sparkle Kingdom. He wanted everybody to join his evil army!

He raised a magic staff over the kingdom. Then he chanted, “Ooga-chooga-looga-lay! From now on, you will obey. Ooga-chooga-looga-lay! You will follow what I say.”

Everyone fell into a trance, until . . . Power Time! Princess Power twirled into action. She snapped the staff and broke the spell!

“Ha!” Ellie flipped the comic closed. “Trolls never win.”

She gathered up her tote bag and super-new comic. Then she joined Mom and Dad at the cashier’s desk.

While Ellie stood in line, some silver bracelets dangling from a nearby rack caught her eye. She plucked one from the hook and eyed it closely.

It was decorated with dancing kitten charms.

Ellie gasped. “A KitKat charm bracelet! This is what Hannah wanted! Dad!” She held up the bracelet. “Can I get this for Hannah? She loves KitKat! Please, please, please, please?”

Dad chuckled and nodded.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Ellie hopped excitedly. She still felt terrible about her fight with Hannah. The charm bracelet would make the perfect peace offering.

When it was their turn to check out, Ellie plunked everything onto the desk.

“Did you have fun today?” the cashier asked.

“Yes!” Ellie squealed. “It was even more fun than wrestling a mechanical squid!”

The casher smiled, looking slightly puzzled. “That’s wonderful.”
