Chapter Nine

He damn near dropped the baby.

Kian swallowed hard, his attention switching from the beautiful baby boy in his arms to the somber lavender eyes of the archangel, and then to the tiny little girl she held. He swallowed again, nerves and exhilaration heating his blood. “How can she can be mine? That’s impossible.”

“It’s not. The fates saw fit to grace Allianna with two children, both with different destinies ahead of them. Both will do great things, but only the fates know which side of the light they’ll fall on.”

Looking shell-shocked, Islador took his son from Kian’s arms. “Looks like I’m not the only one with a membership card, brother. Aren’t we the lucky ones?”

Oh yes, lucky ones indeed. Kian couldn’t believe he’d been granted such a wish after all he’d done. He took a hesitant step toward the archangel, unsure if he would be allowed to hold something so precious, so fragile. Wanting desperately to feel his daughter in his arms.

“Take her, Kian. She’s yours…for now.” Argyll eased the infant into his care tenderly, smoothing her fingers over the downy scalp as he encased her in his protection.

“She…for now?”

“It was Allianna’s wish that you not know about this one,” Argyll told him sadly. “Neither you nor Islador were to know of her existence, for her safety and yours. I believe you should have the opportunity to meet your daughter, to understand that while your actions might have been deplorable, something phenomenal came of them.”

His arms trembled with the magnitude of her words. This precious bundle of joy was the product of the worst night of Allianna’s life. “Did…did Allianna name her?”

“No. She expressed her wishes before we began the caesarian. By the time this one was born, Allianna was beyond such thoughts,” Argyll told him gently. “She doesn’t hate her, Kian, far from it. Allianna loves her with all she has, but she knows what will happen if Lucifer finds out she exists.”

His heart plummeted into his feet. He stared down at the angelic face, those miraculous eyes so like his. How much of the demon was inside her, he wondered with overwhelming guilt. His throat closed as he thought of all this innocence being tainted by Antzel’s evilness. “She’s not really mine, is she? She was conceived the night I…the night Antzel raped Allianna. She’s his daughter.”

Argyll cleared her throat. “I’m not supposed to tell you any of this, but I don’t see why you should suffer, believing that for the rest of eternity. Remiel pulled some strings with the Almighty,” she told him quietly, her voice lowering to almost a whisper. “He feels responsible for his part in bringing Allianna into the world, and for not being a father. It weighs heavy on him, knowing what she sacrificed for heaven and hell. Without her, the hierarchy would’ve crumbled beneath Antzel’s crusade.”

Hope swelled inside him, warring with the guilt.

“It’s cost Remiel more than I dare to say, but the child is innocent. While Islador’s son is destined to
