Chapter Eight

Derek parked his SUV in the ranger station parking lot, out of the way of the floodlight that washed over the dark driveway. Elijah’s truck and Griff’s Jeep were already there. It wasn’t quite completely dark, but the evening insects were ushering in the night with their songs, buzzing and humming from every direction. The midsummer wildflowers bloomed and their scent carried on the heavy evening breeze like confectionaries.

He’d spent the ride thinking about Bria. The kisses had about been his undoing, though he’d never force himself on her, it was all he could do to get his bear to slow down. She’d talked about the waterfall he knew well. He and his father spent many summer days by that pool, swimming and talking.

Ice slipped down his spine. They had rarely seen people at the meadow, but once, a long time ago, he saw a brown-haired girl staring at him. She wasn’t afraid. And he couldn’t stop staring at her until his father urged him to follow. He hadn’t thought about the memory in years, but Bria’s telling of her experience jolted his brain.

Could that little girl have been Bria? He’d felt a compulsion to be near her. Something he’d never felt before or after...until he ran across her in the woods.

Holy shit.

This mate thing works in weird ways.

He closed the door and headed for the station, swatting away a mosquito that strafed his face. If the wolves were there already he didn’t see them, or scent them for that matter. He sniffed again. No, nothing.

The gravel in the parking lot crunched underfoot and he headed to the door. A lone lightbulb shone on the stoop, barely casting enough light to see. He opened the unlocked door and went right in.

His plan to surprise Bria at the meadow was almost fully formed. He needed to talk to Powell. He was sure the bear would help him. Derek would give Bria what she wanted most—a shifting bear. Then he would convince her to not reveal the information. And finally, he would tell her he was a bear shifter himself. Easy, right? At that point, she should be thrilled he was a shifter.

Not.

Truly, all he wanted was her to be happy. And to feel comfortable with him. That professor who lied to her should be glad he wasn’t in Deep Creek, or Derek would see to it that the man never stole again.

“Who’s there?” Elijah called from the common room. Derek?

The old bear had the hearing of a cub and Derek sensed his power as soon as he stepped into the hallway. Like a jolt of heat to the face, the bear’s presence was unmistakable.

“Me.” Derek shut the door and walked down the hall toward Elijah’s voice.

He stepped into the common room where Elijah, Griff, Alicia and a teen cub named Jesse sat. The odor of pine permeated the room. Nothing like a strong deodorizing cleaner to leave an odor that burned the sinuses. He wrinkled his nose, then nodded toward the group.
