Our Weapons Are “Mighty through God”
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. (Colossians 1:9-11)
The battle plan presented in 2 Corinthians 10:4 encompasses much more than an individual Christian or an individual church. Obviously, our Lord Jesus is conducting an age-long war against the chief adversary, and our part in this conflict is visible only in our segment of time and in our portion of the planet. Were it not for God’s “might” so succinctly promised in that little phrase “our weapons are mighty,” we would never have the courage to stand against the ungodly.
Jesus said, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). The greater our awareness is of the importance, the wonder, and the awesomeness of God’s power, the more confident our own spiritual strength will be. Salvation is a work of creation. God has made us a new “creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17) that “is created in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). We now are equipped and have the effective power with which God raised Jesus from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20).
These are not minor promises! We are empowered by God to do His work—but we must use His might, not ours.
In a world that is going to hell, we are supposed to be part of the solution. We are to approve ourselves by the armor of righteousness (2 Corinthians 6:4, 7). Yes, we have individual armor (Ephesians 6). We have a helmet and a breastplate, a sword belt, a sword, shoes, shin guards, because a soldier must be armed. But in Kingdom battles against the wicked one, we are part of the army, not the army. How do we fight this battle? Our bodies are to be instruments. We are to use the armor of light. We are to use righteousness.
