Chapter 21

Aurora

“Something’s up with Donovan.” Brad handed me a glass of white wine and sat down next to me.

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. He just seems off. Actually, he seems pissed at me, and I have no idea why.”

Feigning confusion, I furrowed my brow, but I knew exactly what Brad was referring to. In the few days since Donovan had come home from London, he had been distant and cold. His behavior was in stark contrast with how he had been acting toward me in the days before his return home. We had been in regular contact with one another for both work and pleasure. It had become clear to me that neither of us were interested in remaining platonic. At least I thought that is what was happening.

Although I spent the last few days pretending that nothing was wrong, I knew exactly why Donovan had turned to ice. When he got off the elevator at KI, I immediately felt his presence in the office. It was if there was an invisible thread that tugged my shoulders in his direction as soon as he’d arrived. In fact, I remembered feeling a slightly weaker pull moments before, probably before he had even entered the building. When I turned around to greet him, I recognized shock, confusion, then finally rage on his face.

After being thousands of miles away from him, my physical attraction had grown exponentially. I felt absolute in knowing I couldn’t stay away from Donovan. It became obvious after our interaction in the office that afternoon and over the next few days that Donovan was questioning how I felt. He saw Brad help me with my coat, watched him embrace me, and made the assumption that I was involved with Brad. I couldn’t blame Donovan. From his perspective, he was simply putting pieces of the puzzle together. But there was a piece missing that he failed to acknowledge. I had tried to explain this to him several times, but he’d dodged me at every turn.

The truth was simple. It had been nice spending time with Brad. But what Donovan witnessed between Brad and I was very innocent. It was the harmony between two people that enjoyed each other’s company. Donovan mistook romantic affection for what was really just a comfortable interaction between two people who had grown to be friends. Sure Brad and I had shared a handful of kisses over the time we had been dating, but the spark never ignited into a roaring fire. In hindsight, I had been drawn to Donovan from the start, and I became more attracted to him after each interaction. Even though I wasn’t obligated to tell Donovan my personal business, I felt guilty that our flirting while I was dating Brad had caused turmoil.

Added to all of this was Claire. That day when Brad came to get me for lunch, I had seen Brad eyeing her in a way that told me his attraction for her was off the charts. Hell,
