Candle Protection Ritual

For this ritual you will need to choose a candle to represent you. It can be any color you wish. You will also need either four or eight white candles that are noticeably shorter than the candle that symbolizes you.

Ideally, you should perform this ritual at an altar or sacred space in your home. If you do not have a sacred space, a small coffee or side table will work well.

Place the candle that represents you in the center of your altar, and surround it with the smaller white candles. Light the candle that symbolizes you, followed by the other candles. Light these in a clockwise direction, starting with the candle that is closest to facing north.

Sit down a few feet away from the candles and gaze at the candle that represents you. Notice how it is shielded and protected by the other candles. Visualize yourself surrounded by divine white light, in exactly the same way that the white candles are surrounding the central candle that represents you.

When you feel totally surrounded by white light, ask for divine protection. If you come from a Christian tradition, you might like to say a prayer, such as the Lord’s Prayer. Pause for several seconds, and then say something along the lines of: “I need divine protection at this time, and ask (whichever deity you choose) to strengthen, guide, and protect me for as long as necessary.” If you require a specific form of protection, tell your deity exactly what the problem is. Pause every now and again, to see what responses come into your mind.

Once you have finished your conversation, snuff out the candles, again starting from the north and going around in a clockwise direction. As you snuff each candle out, whisper thank you. Finally, pick up the candle that represents you. Hold it up as high as you can, while offering a sincere thank you to your deity for providing you with protection. Snuff out the candle, and keep it in a safe place. As this candle represents you, you do not want anyone else to handle it.

Another candle ritual, to provide protection from a specific person, is included in chapter 13.

In the last two chapters, we’ve covered a variety of ways to protect yourself. Now that you know how to protect yourself, it’s time to learn how to protect others. We’ll start in the next chapter.
