When Rowan finally awoke for the day, light was filtering through the thin curtains. She was thirsty and her stomach was growling with hunger. Jagger was lying face down, his big, delicious body still bare. She lay there for a while, drinking in the sight of him. Already, last night seemed like a dream. She didn’t have sex like that. Men didn’t want her like that. But Jagger had made love to her like she was the sexiest thing he’d ever seen. She longed to crawl into his arms, to wake him up with kisses. But she didn’t have the nerve, and she feared the daylight would bring rejection. Instead, when he began to stir, she jumped up and headed for the bathroom.

The shower was good and hot, and it refreshed her. When she emerged in a towel, Jagger was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at his phone.

“Morning,” he said, but he didn’t look up.

“Morning,” she said hesitantly. She gathered last night’s clothes and retreated to the bathroom to get dressed. When she was ready, he showered, then they collected their things and left, barely speaking to each other. Her heart sank. It was horribly reminiscent of a bad one-night stand. And after she’d had one of those, she promised herself never again.

Outside, water pooled in every available surface, but at least the rain had stopped and the sky was a grayish yellow.

“Shall we grab breakfast from a gas station?” Jagger suggested, and she agreed.

They didn’t speak on the way to the gas station, or while they were standing outside it, munching on breakfast bagels. She eyed him discreetly, wondering what he was thinking. Wondering how he could have mated her with such passion, when now he could barely stand to look her in the eye.

Was this why he didn’t want a mate? She’d heard of guys who lost interest once they’d had sex with a woman. The thought made her heart hurt.

Half way back to Ragtown, she couldn’t stand it any longer.

“You can’t do this to me, Jagger,” she burst out. “Be hot and intense one minute, and then cold as ice the next.”

But Jagger didn’t so much as twitch. He stayed silent, watching the road ahead.

Rowan’s face flushed. Dammit. Of all the things she could have said, that definitely hadn’t been the best option. She cleared her throat. “I can deal with your secrets. Whatever you’ve done in the past, I can handle. Because you’ve got a good heart, and that’s what matters to me.”

Jagger’s head snapped in her direction and he held her gaze for three, four seconds. There was such darkness in his eyes that it made her tremble.

“You don’t know my heart, Rowan. It’s black. It might as well not exist and it’s dangerous for you to get close to me.” He returned his gaze to the road and didn’t look at her again.

Rowan went limp against the seat back as his words pierced her soul. She didn’t understand what he meant, but for the first time, she sensed his darkness.
