Restraint was going to kill Ewan.

It had been two days since the kiss, and it had taken all his considerable control to keep from following through on where that first explosive encounter had been heading. He wasn’t fool enough to insult Isobel by suggesting she didn’t know her own feelings. But he was still very aware she’d experienced years of trauma because of power dynamics, and he didn’t want to do anything to inadvertently pressure her, no matter how attracted he was. And damn it, he couldn’t stop thinking about how she tasted, how she felt in his arms, wrapped around him. A high-definition reel of it had been playing on repeat in his head, accompanying him into the shower. Into his dreams.

He wanted her in a way he hadn’t wanted anyone or anything since he’d left for basic training, determined to become the best of the best. But they had to take it slow. Not only because it was in her best interest, but because it was in his. This whole domestic partnership they’d fallen into at home had done nothing but fuel his fantasies of her staying and becoming a part of the fabric of his life here, and that wasn’t fair to her.

Though he’d stuck to his decision not to read the full dossier Conroy had prepared, he’d filled in some blanks from the story she’d told about her childhood and the death of her parents. While she hadn’t spelled it out, he was guessing the former guardian was her manager, Paul Burgette. Or was he her agent? Both? Ewan supposed it didn’t matter. He likely had control over her career. That had to be what she’d meant by him thinking he owned her. The bastard.

Eventually, Isobel would have to face her past and everything she’d walked away from. Ewan would do whatever was necessary to help get her untangled from that situation. And then what? Though he didn’t know all the particulars, Conroy had let drop some details about her album sales that suggested she was a big fucking deal. What were the chances that, once she was free, she’d want to walk away from the life she’d led to live in his tiny village working in his pub for any kind of long-term? It had been easier for him to imagine that in the beginning, before he knew anything about who she was.

And yet…

She needed a home. A family. Some normal. She was starving for it. She could have all that here, with him. She did have all that here, for now.

Across the pub, she laughed at something Flora McGowan said and refilled her glass. She’d settled so much in the past weeks, finding her rhythm and her backbone, blooming in a way he hadn’t expected. However different it was from where she’d started, she fit here. But wouldn’t staying limit her world in a wholly different way? Much as he couldn’t imagine life without her now, he didn’t want that for her. He wanted her to have the freedom to soar in whatever way she wanted.
