CHAPTER 14

Tanner

My mind is reeling as I walk out of the house. I can’t believe she’s leaving. She has to know that I was protecting her. I replay all our interactions. She couldn’t have found out about shifters. I’ve been so careful. How did I manage to make things worse?

Why am I in this truck right now? I should be with Annalise.

I shake my head in frustration. “Where are we going?”

Jack pulls the truck onto the main road. “Gabe said that some kids in town found a decomposed body back behind a group of houses along the edge of the woods. We’re going to meet him there.”

I look out the window, confused. “Why am I going?”

Walt answers from the front seat. “We need to determine if it’s human or shifter. And if foul play was involved. If its prophecy related, we need to figure out what it all means pretty quickly.”

I’m still confused.

Unable to hide my irritation and without thinking, I blurt out my question. “I ask again. Why am I going?”

Jack raises an eyebrow as he makes eye contact through the rearview mirror. “The sheriff asked you to come. He wants you checking surveillance footage from every possible angle. We need to know how this body ended up in the woods without any shifters in town knowing about it.”

I scratch my chin, hoping to get a handle on my attitude. “I can do that better from the house. My computer setup is better than what they have at the station. And besides, I need an estimated time of death to know where to start.”

My wolf is howling his objections to this little road trip. And I couldn’t agree more. All I care about right now is Annalise.

The rest of the ride is quiet. We finally pull into a vacant lot at the edge of the woods. The scene is total chaos. The perimeter is taped off. Police and wolves are everywhere. Doc, the shaman in town, is helping the coroner collect evidence so they can get the body loaded and taken away.

I’m standing by the truck with Jack and Walt. I’ve been pacing back and forth since we got here. Looking at my watch, we’ve been here for over an hour. Doing nothing but waiting. And I still keep asking myself the same question. What am I doing here? This is not the best use of my time or my resources.

Jack interrupts my thoughts as he pulls himself up to sit on the back of the tailgate. “What’s wrong, Tanner? You haven’t been right since we left the house.”

I stare at him for a minute before I answer. Needing to calm down in front of the alpha. “Annalise said she’s leaving after Malloy is caught. That she’ll pay me for my services. And I can’t do anything to fix it because I’m out here in the middle of nowhere.”

I stop pacing to point toward the gurney that’s transporting the deceased man across the grassy lawn. “That guy’s situation won’t change no matter what I do or when I do it.
