DOMENICO

Natasha hadn’t stopped staring at Rogelio. I could see her breathing faster and faster, her chest rising and falling rapidly like a cornered animal. Rogelio was staring right back at her, his eyes scanning every inch of her face with a combination of surprise, dread, and an odd sort of hunger. I could see the tremor of Natasha’s hands as she began to shake, and I decided then and there that I had to put a stop to this.

I stepped forward, putting myself between Natasha and the erstwhile demon king. I stayed close enough to her that I could feel the warmth of her against my back, hoping my closeness would at least reassure her somewhat.

“If you’re playing with my mind right now,” Natasha growled at Rogelio, “I’m going to kill you.” I could tell that it was the tone she used when trying to cover up her fear, and I hated that I’d heard it so many times that I could recognize it so easily.

“I’m not,” Rogelio said. “Believe me, I wouldn’t be able to control your mind even if I wanted to.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I growled. I reached a hand behind myself, and Natasha took it, squeezing desperately.

Rogelio glanced around the room full of kneeling demonic bar patrons, all still held by my power. Some of them were whimpering faintly; a few were staring up at me with glossy, unseeing eyes. “Let’s talk about this somewhere else, yes? Somewhere a little less public.”

“You want us to follow you to a second location?” Cristiano said. “Yeah, that doesn’t sound like a great plan.”

Rogelio shrugged, a carefully studied performance of casualness. “Suit yourself,” he said. “But I already know why you’ve come so far to find me. It’s about James and Anna, isn’t it?”

Behind me, Natasha made a ragged, broken sound, and I squeezed her hand.

“Come with me, and I’ll tell you everything,” Rogelio said, and then he brushed past us to head for the front door.

“Why?” I asked. “Why would you just help us, without asking for anything in exchange?” It felt like some sort of trick. Would he offer us information then demand some sort of favor in return? The Rogelio I knew wasn’t the sort of man who did anything out of the kindness of his heart. I didn’t have the patience to wait for the other shoe to drop.

Rogelio paused. “I’ve been on the run for a very long time,” he said over his shoulder. “Too long, maybe. After the first two or three centuries, the excitement begins to wear off. And now that Lucifer is after Natasha, it seems like it’s time for me to do my part. Why did you think it was suddenly so easy for you to find me after all these years?”

I was about to protest, to tell him that whatever he wanted to tell us, he should just say then and there, but before I could, Natasha dropped my hand and brushed past me, following Rogelio.
