Avoiding Lily is getting harder and harder. I can’t take it anymore. I don’t care about the gag order. I don’t want to do it. I want to talk to her.

I’ve seen the way she looks at me since that day. I see the pain in her eyes when she catches mine. I’ve noticed how pale she’s become, how dark the circles under her eyes, how downtrodden she looks. She doesn’t deserve this from me.

I’m fed up with biding my time. I know I brought this on myself but I just want to go to her. I need to explain to her how my time at Emberforge has changed my perspective on things.

No, not Emberforge, I think to myself. She did. Lily swooped in and made me realize that I don’t want to be the same person as before, the one who didn’t care who he bed. The one who used and dumped women at his convenience.

The gag order has given me time to think, maybe too much time. It was unfair of me to push her away the minute I was done with her. She didn’t ask for it. She hadn’t been throwing herself at me like the common prostitute. She was an innocent, shy virgin and I treated her no better than a whore.

I saw the humiliation and betrayal in her eyes. It's stuck with me to this day. It haunts me. I've taken a gift, a very precious gift from her and then threw it away like it was trash. The expression on her face makes me feel sick to my stomach just remembering it.

I need to make it up to her. I need to beg her forgiveness. I need to show her that I’m more than my actions. She deserves so much more than a simple apology.

Lily deserves to be treated like a queen. Like a member of the royalty. She’s special to me. After everything...I don’t deserve her but I can do something that shows her what she does deserve.

Figuring out what I’m going to do for her is the first step on my path. She’s a human, so I don’t know what she might like. Elves like our finery, we revel in the riches we surround ourselves with. I don’t know much about humans though, aside from what I’ve learned in my brief time at Emberforge.

I decide to ask around. I start with Dondran Emeze, one of the Duke’s men.

“Emeze.” I approach him in the hall the next day, looking around to make sure we aren’t overheard.

“What is it, Aamaris?” Emeze gives me a once-over, using my name instead of my title.

“I need to ask you something,” I say, shifting to stand next to him, so it looks like we’re in casual conversation.

“Speak,” his tone is flat.

“I wish to pick a gift for one of the women here,” I say, keeping it vague. “Some trifle that might help with courting.”

“Can’t really help you there,” Emeze says, studying his nails. “I know little to nothing about humans.
