Box 3.2 B. V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology: Fostering an Entrepreneurial Culture in Engineering Education

The BVB College of Engineering and Technology in Hubli, India, has systematically sought to build a business ecosystem with the following elements: (a) focus on local economic and social needs; (b) engage external entrepreneurs to kick-start the ecosystem; (c) support deserving enterprises to showcase early winners; (d) connect the start-up success to develop a culture of entrepreneurship on campus; (e) nurture and strengthen entrepreneurial culture through curriculum interventions; and (f) go global and benchmark.

The college has set up the Centre for Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship in order to develop entrepreneurial thinking and encourage students to take on socially relevant challenges. Since its start in 2012, the center has hosted 34 companies and has created 230 jobs in the region. Of the 34 companies, 23 percent were started by students and recent graduates. Several of the start-up companies have received angel and venture capital funding from Indian and foreign investors.
