Chapter Fourteen

Matthew left the house to see the men waiting for him. He stopped halfway to them when Shyfawn came out of the barn, leading Kala behind. She wore one of Dusty’s split riding skirts and his oversized hat and coat.

He marched up to her. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Coming with you,” she told him simply as she tightened the cinch.

“Oh, no you’re not,” he informed her, but the look of determination in her eyes told him this was one argument he would not win.

She met his hard gaze. “Yes, I am,” she said coolly.

He grumbled something under his breath. “Fine, but if you fall behind, we aren’t waiting for you and when we’re moving the cattle, stay out of the way.” He turned and headed for his horse, muttering under his breath the whole time.

Shyfawn glared at his back as he walked away, then made a face and stuck her tongue out. She would show him. She would do her best just to prove him wrong.

He whirled around. “And another thing...”

With a gasp, Shyfawn sucked her tongue back into her mouth. She felt her face flush, horrified that she had been caught.

Matthew stared at her. “Did you just stick your tongue out at me?”

She swallowed hard, staring at him with wide eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

He fought back a smile, loving the look on her face. “You did, didn’t you?”

“Uh, I, uh.” She backed away. “N-no.”

He advanced on her. “Yes, you did, I saw you.”

She collected herself. “No, I didn’t. You were seeing things again.”

He smiled and chuckled as he turned back to his horse. There wasn’t much he could do. He figured he deserved it for the way he was acting. He just didn’t want to take the chance of her getting hurt or distracting the men.

Travis laughed. “I say let her come along. This might prove to be quite entertaining.” His comment brought a chorus of laughter from the men, and Matthew did his best to glare at him, though his smile won the fight.

They rode out to the herd and found Charlie. He had a few scratches but was none the worse for wear. His horse and saddle had taken the brunt of the attack. They delivered him a fresh horse and started the cattle back down toward the ranch.

It impressed Matthew at the way Shyfawn pitched in and helped them herd the cattle together. After some instruction from Travis, she was right out there with them, moving the cattle. If a calf tried to break free, she moved him back into the herd. She continued to amaze him.

It was late in the afternoon when they made it back to the ranch. The men whooped and galloped their horses to the edge of the hill overlooking the place.

“Last one to the river has to give Winkey an eye,” Travis said as he turned his horse.

“Hold up!” Matthew shouted, getting their attention. Then he turned to Shyfawn. “Would you like someone to get a bath ready for you?”

She shook her head.
