Like tensile strength and compressive strength, shear strength is measured in MPa .

Modulus of rupture (MOR), also known as flexural strength, is the stress on a material just before it fails . It is typically measured using a transverse stress test where the material (in our case glass) is suspended between two points and pushed down on in the center (Fig. 12.3).

Fig. 12.3Modulus of rupture test

The top of the glass experiences compressive stress, while the bottom of the glass experiences tensile stress. Since glass has a much higher compressive strength than tensile strength, it fails from the bottom up. In theory, this means that the tensile strength is also the modulus of rupture . But due to the number of surface defects on a typical glass sample, the MOR is often less than the tensile strength. Glass typically has an MOR of 30–60 MPa .

Shear modulus, also known as the modulus of rigidity, is a measure of the rigidity of the material . It is measured by applying a force on the material and measuring how far the material is deflected by that force (Fig. 12.4).
