“So, Alex is coming too?”

He twisted to look at me. “Yeah,” he said, laughing under his breath. I watched the line of his jaw and wrapped my fingers around his wrist. We stood in the water, staring toward the vast nowhere that was the gulf.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He kissed my cheek. “’Cause…”

“That isn’t an answer, Maverick.” I sighed.

He grinned and tugged me closer. “Don’t be mad,” he said, an inch from my lips.

I cut my gaze away from him, trying to stay angry, but every fiber of my being just wanted to kiss him. God, I thought, this isn’t fair.

“You’re pretty when you’re mad.” He dragged a thumb across my chin.

“You’re crazy,” I responded.

He just smothered me in a kiss. I looped my arms around his neck on instinct, and he grumbled a sound in his throat. The surf bit our legs, and he brought up his hands to hold my face. “You know what, Emma?”

I stared at him, the stubble on his chin, the intense tease of his gaze. “What?”

He dipped down to kiss me again, once, the slow and steady kind of kiss that I swear I could feel in my toes. Then he pulled back to look at me, all wide-eyed and mysterious. “I think I love you.”

The bottom fell from my stomach, and I stared then opened my mouth to speak, but he shook his head. “Don’t,” he said. His voice was raw, almost quiet.

I frowned. “What? Why?”

He shrugged, dragging his hands down my arms to hold my hands instead. “Because I love you…and that’s enough for now.”
