GOD AND PAIN

A FEW YEARS AGO I was speaking at a conference in eastern Texas. I had just finished a long question-and-answer session and was desperately looking for the nearest bathroom when a woman approached me with her hands folded neatly in front of her.

“Excuse me,” she said in a quiet voice. “I have one more question, if that’s all right.”

“Sure thing,” I said, looking over her shoulder to see if the bathroom was in that direction.

“Well, it’s not a question exactly, I guess . . . ” She rubbed her hands together as her gaze drifted back and forth between me and the floor. “How do you . . . How can I . . . ”

I refocused my attention on her and realized she was holding back tears.

Taking in a deep breath, all at once she asked, “Could you just pray for my daughter?”

“Definitely,” I answered. “Is she here today?”

“Yes. Well, no. Well, she’ll be here later this afternoon.” She bit her lip. “It’s just been a hard time for our family, you know. We’ve always been a normal family. Normal, you know.”

“I’d be happy to pray for her,” I said, feeling very curious, but not wanting to cause any more distress. “Just grab me before the next session starts, and I’ll pray for her.”

“OK. Thank you,” she said, and she walked off with tears forming in the corners of her eyes.

I continued in search of a bathroom, feeling a rising sense of foreboding at the back of my mind.

I have been sharing my gift publicly for ten years now, and in that time I have prayed for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons. Being in ministry tends to acquaint you with a very wide spectrum of human experience. I regularly meet people celebrating in the midst of their greatest victories, sifting through the pieces of their greatest failures, or facing the harsh reality of their greatest tragedies. Sometimes I encounter people in all three situations on the same day. Thankfully I learned quickly that I am not responsible for solving every problem presented to me. I am responsible for saying what God is saying and doing what God is doing.

Because of that I am rarely overwhelmed by the problems people are facing. I have been thrust into the middle of impossible and overwhelming situations many times before, and God always has something to say—to expect any less would be a disservice to my history with Him. Still, something about the quivering pain I saw behind the woman’s eyes left a lingering dread I could not seem to shake.

Later that night I walked back into the main room where the conference was being held. The worship band was already playing. The woman I had spoken to was nowhere in sight, so I found a spot in the back of the room and waited. A few minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder.
