Meditation

Meditation is a steam valve for your mental health.

The benefits range from not dying of hypertension to transcendent spiritual bliss, if you’re into that kind of thing.

There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of meditation styles. Some of them require difficult and painful postures, drum music, and incense. Others charge thousands of dollars for a magic word you repeat over and over again.

Beware of wisdom that charges admission.

My preferred method, zazen (Zen meditation) is just sitting on your ass, back straight, and staring at a blank spot on a wall. You don’t try to not think. It’s just that you don’t grasp your thoughts, and let them float. You realize they’re just thoughts, and no more or less real than anything else.

Zazen is extremely difficult. It can take decades to get it right, and the realizations you experience are life-altering and sometimes frightening.

It has also profoundly influenced my personal philosophy, and has saved my life a few times.

Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana isn’t about zazen, but it’s a damn good place to start.
