Screw: by rotation of the screw, product is transported from inlet to outlet, while product is scraped off the inner surface of the barrel and mixed into the bulk.

Cooling jacket: the level of coolant inside the cooling jacket should be such that the outside of the barrel is flooded by the boiling coolant. Usually ammonia is applied as coolant.

Control system: the temperature of the coolant is controlled via the evaporating pressure, while the level of coolant in the jacket is controlled via a restriction valve on the liquid coolant supply. A basic level of product control can be achieved by controlling the inlet pressure of the extruder via the rotational speed and controlling the outlet temperature by the evaporating pressure.
