Dane was both frustrated and angry. The woman had him tied up in knots. Surely, she still didn't believe he shouldn't marry her because of her past profession. He'd made it perfectly clear that her past was her past. Hell, he'd done enough terrible things in his past, also.

"I don't want to talk about this now. Carol should be down any minute and possibly her husband also." As if she'd predicted it, they both left the small building that housed his office and walked to the buggy.

"That didn't take long," Nellie mumbled to him.

"I'm concerned for my wife's safety. Isn't there something the sheriff can do?" Fletched looked downright angry. That was a good response. Anger beat fear in any game of life. Or cards.

"We're headed there now."

Fletcher nodded. "Very well. I will go, too."

"But what about your business?" Carol said.

Her husband patted her hand. "You are my business first."

Dane glanced over at Nellie. They both smiled. It seemed this couple had settled into marriage quite well already. Now, if he could get Nellie to agree to settle down with him.

"Do you need to lock up?" Dane asked.

"Yes. Just give me a moment, and I will be with you."

Mrs. Fletcher grinned at Nellie. "He's such a nice man."

The three of them entered the buggy and were soon joined by Mr. Fletcher.

The ride to the jailhouse didn't take long. Mid-morning was not the busiest of times. They remained silent as they made their way. Mrs. Fletcher seemed much calmer after her husband joined them, most likely because he didn't act as though she had deceived him.

"Well, what brings you folks here?" Mace looked up from his desk where he was scribbling in a ledger.

"We have a potential problem, Sheriff, and I think you need to be made aware of it." Dane stood behind Nellie who had taken one of the two chairs in front of the sheriff's desk. Fletcher stood behind his wife, his hand on her shoulder.

Mace pushed the brim of his hat up with his thumb. "What's the problem?"

Dane told the story, with a few comments from Nellie and Mrs. Fletcher. Once they began the story, the sheriff pulled a piece of paper out of his desk drawer, and dipping his pen in an inkwell, began to write information down.

The room grew silent as they finished telling the story to the sheriff. He leaned back in his chair and tapped his lips with his index finger. "I don't suppose any of you know where this man is staying while in Santa Fe?"

Four heads shook 'no.'

Mace stretched and sat forward, his forearms on the desk. "My mind is working as a sheriff, but also as a man who married a mail order bride myself. If anyone was threatening to take her from me, I would surely find a reason to shoot him."

He grinned at them. "However, do not take that as permission for you to do the same."

"Sheriff, I thought having Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher move into my boarding house might be a good idea.
