Everything that is created—everything that is below the invisible, eternal realm of God—exists in time.
Everything that exists in time has a purpose for which there is a season for fulfillment.
God’s purposes and activities within time are designed for seasons, which in turn require change.
Let’s look at some additional principles in regard to time and how they relate to the purposes God has given us.
Time Is One of Our Greatest Gifts on Earth
God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.(Genesis 1:16–18, emphasis added)
Time is one of the greatest gifts God gave humanity. He affirmed that time is good, and we need to appreciate what we’ve been given. God placed human beings on earth so that they could enjoy the benefits of time as they learn to know, love, and imitate Him. Eternity has no beginning or end. Time, in my view, is a piece of eternity that God “pulled out” and gave a beginning and end to. Then, He put us in time so that we, too, could experience a beginning and an end to things, grow in maturity and in the character of God, and learn about the creative process and the power of change. I thank God that I live in time right now. In a sense, time gives us the opportunity to prepare for “forever.”
Time Allows Us to Live Life in Seasons
Second, time allows us to live life in seasons and to oversee our visions in increments. Isn’t it nice that you don’t have to live your life all at once? God allows us to spread out our lives in days, months, and years. At any given moment, we have a past, a present, and a future. We should thank Him for this privilege.
Time provides us the opportunity to put our priorities in order and to establish change in our lives. You can decide to do something this year differently than the way in which you did it last year. Time allows you to make that kind of choice. So, time is a benefit in the sense that we can say, “I used to do that in years past, but I don’t do it anymore.” Likewise, whatever you were not doing last year to initiate change to fulfill your purpose, you can make a decision to do now. You can change your behavior in order to have a different experience. I appreciate these dimensions. In the past, I used to be a certain way. In the present, I am another way. In the future, I plan to be a different way. That’s what time allows. Many of us are happy about this reality, because we are glad to be past our pasts.
Of course, our time on earth
