Chapter 16

Upset wasn't the right word. Neither was terrified.

In fact, Sasha didn't really know how she felt.

She killed a wolf, no, a human, or a shifter.. technically, she didn't know what she just killed.

There was a sense of guilt there, Sasha was the kind of person that felt bad when she had to kill a bug.

But there was also a sense of intense relief. She'd seen Jax bleeding on the floor and something twisted inside her. She knew she had to act to save him.

They stepped out of the cave, and she noticed her hand shaking. She was more aware of the gun on her belt now than she was before. She felt echoes of the jolt of the gun as it fired in her hand.

Of course, Jax was beside her. He kept her sane, and comforted her with his presence alone.

The cold forest air was a welcome scent. It was pitch black now, lit only by their flashlights. Before her eyes could even adjust something massive moved in the clearing before them. It swooped down from the sky, landing gently on a boulder.

Paul shifted immediately back to his human form.

“Park rangers and law enforcement are coming. I think they heard the shots, are you all right? What happened in there?”

Jax groaned, still clutching his arm.

“One wolf stayed behind to watch the place, we're okay,” Jax said.

Thunder rumbled in the distance and Sasha felt a water droplet hit her hand. She looked up to see the storm clouds, but of course it was black. More thunder rumbled in the silence. “We'll be leaving in a hurry, then,” Jax said, smiling weakly.

Jax shifted to his dragon form then held a scaled claw out for Sasha. Still dazed, Sasha didn't hesitate. Her side ached and her head throbbed as Jax took to the sky. She’d struck the cave wall hard. She’d nearly been knocked out.

The wind was more violent now, and Sasha saw flashes of lightning between Jax's fingers. Rain pelted her from every side no matter how she crouched. The roar of thunder was constant and deafening.

Even Jax's constant warmth wasn't enough to take the bite out of the cold. She huddled into his rough palm and trembled.

Time passed slowly, and even Jax seemed to be tossed around by the wind. Sasha squeezed her eyes shut and tried not to think.

Finally, Jax landed. He slipped to a rough stop then opened his hand to release Sasha. She stepped out of his grip, dizzy and soaked.

Jax shifted to his human form and immediately removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders.

“Where are we?” Sasha asked as she looked around.

When they left, Sasha hadn't been sure if they were going back to the city or their vehicle. Now, they stood before a squat dark cabin. There was a dirt road leading up to it and most of the windows were boarded shut. Shrubs grew up all around it, nearly concealing it.

“We flew deeper into the park to avoid some of the storm.
