Matt Lipinski’s day had not been an easy one. Not only had he been forced to work all day outside in the pouring rain, but there had been three workplace accidents. How many times did he have to remind the guys to wear hardhats around the constructions site?

Now, there were two men off work for a week and another in the hospital. He should’ve never taken that city contract. They tended to be unreliable and change things halfway through. At least there was one thing he could count on—the delicious chicken at his favorite restaurant.

There were only five Swiss Chalets left in Calgary, and at times like these, he was thankful one of those was close to home. The only downside about the location of this particular one was how busy it got this time of day.

He could’ve ordered it to go, but then he would have to put up with his wife, who had recently filed for divorce. So things weren’t comfortable at home. But here, sitting amongst these filled tables with the scent of chicken wafting through the air, this was the kind of relaxation he needed.

Nothing happened. He couldn’t even twitch a finger. In fact, the only thing he could do was roll his eyes, which he did.

Matt pulled his gaze all over, looking to see if the others were in the same frozen state he was. They were. A child to the left of him had his feet in the air in mid-jump, while the couple on the other side were desperately reaching out for each other. But it was the old man sitting at the table in front of him that sent a chill down his spine. The urgency that passed between them when their eyes met was so thick Matt could taste it.

Then just like that, it was over. Everything clattered to the ground, including the people filling the room.

It took a second for Matt to chase away the strange sensations tingling across his skin. When he finally managed to pick himself off the ground, the first thing he noticed was a strange overpowering scent in the air.
