DAIRY ANIMALS: MANAGING TRIPLETS AND QUADS

Cows and sheep typically give birth to singles or twins. Goats typically have twins, but triplets are common and, occasionally, quadruplets. Multiples are more common with Nigerian Dwarfs, Pygmies, and Kinders, and the concern is that each kid gets enough milk. Monitor their weight gain and behavior to ensure they are getting enough. A hungry kid won’t gain weight and will cry for milk. In addition, here are a couple of ideas for managing multiples.

Bottle feeding. Bucklings are usually more aggressive feeders than their sisters are, so they make good candidates for bottle feeding. Choose one (if triplets) or two (if quads) and train them to the bottle at birth. You may need the milk from another doe if their mother is not producing enough on her own.
