Chapter 7

AS they headed to the conference room, Suzan tried to recall everything Byron and Percy had told her while they hurriedly dressed.

“As a shifter, you can still be injured,” Byron had said, “but you’ll recover from wounds that could kill a human.”

“Can I die?” she’d asked.

Both men had blanched, as if she’d suggested something abominable. Percy rubbed his face. “We live longer lives than humans, but we can all die from injuries that couldn’t normally be healed.”

“So, for example,” she’d offered. “If I get decapitated.”

“Jesus Christ, Suzi.” Byron gawked, shaking his head. “Don’t talk like that.”

“I just want to understand.”

Byron had touched her cheek, stroking. “What you need to understand is because we’re all mated, our lives are bound together. The idea of you dying is…unbearable to us. And if one of us were to die, well, the others would have a hard time surviving. Literally. Shifters can’t go on for long when they lose a mate. Hopefully, being part of a triad gives you extra support. You know, if something happened to one of us.”

“Enough about dying,” Percy had said as he pulled on his jeans.

Byron had agreed. “Now that we’ve mated, and now that you know you’re a shifter, you might start to feel…unusual.”

She’d looked up from buttoning her cotton blouse. “You mean it gets stranger than this?”

They’d gone on to tell her about something called the mate bond, a driving force that made mated shifters want to be together at all costs. It generally caused most shifters to feel anxious and needy in those heady days after mating.

To compound the issue, Percy and Byron warned her hormones might start operating on overdrive. Most shifters shifted for the first time as teenagers. Because she’d shifted for the first time as an adult, all those pent-up hormones that had been stifled by the drug would now probably rise to the surface. In short, she might very well experience her first heat.

“Heat?” she’d cried. “Like an animal?”

Byron had bitten his lip and had given her one of his adorable frowns, but she could tell from the tremor of his lip that he fought back a smile as well. “I’m sorry, babe. You married into a family of animals.”

Now, as they approached the main building of the Ursa Lodge, Percy looped his arm around her shoulders. “Try not to stress over the shifter stuff. Everything will happen as it should.”

“I’m sorry we didn’t explain everything to you in advance,” Byron said. “We would have but, well, like you said, it’s happening so fast.” He smoothed a hand over her ribs and grazed her breast with his thumb. “All I can think about is getting close to you.”

“If there’s one thing all shifters have in common,” said Percy, “it’s that we all have trouble ignoring our libidos.”

“I understand.” She did, after all. Hell, even now, she would have gladly removed her clothing again and begged them to take her right at the front entrance of the lodge, onlookers be damned.

Byron spun her around to face him and smiled.
