B y the time I got Silas back to the bedroom, Emily had the sheets replaced and a new comforter thrown over the top. The side window was open, allowing fresh air in. At least it didn’t smell so much like puke, piss and sweat now.

All night long, off and on, Silas would start gagging. Sometimes it was nothing that came up, while other times it was just bile. A few times he pissed himself, too, with the force. I was glad I had thought to purchase the waterproof mattress protector. There was nothing he could do to stop it, and no number of meds helped, either.

Thankfully, around three in the morning, he’d finally calmed enough to sleep a good few hours, without interruption.

Every time Silas would cry out in his sleep, seeking comfort, Emily was there, trying to hush him, calm him. When he’d start gagging, she rubbed his back soothingly. She didn’t bat an eye when he’d piss his pants, soaking the blankets and her in the process.

I was learning quickly that when it came to Silas, Emily didn’t complain once. Not a single word. She was there, giving him exactly what he needed without a second thought.

I bet if the rules were reversed, it’d be the same way.

“I’ll stay here while you go get cleaned up, darlin’,” I said to Emily. Her eyes were red and swollen, the same as Silas’s.

She nodded, then a second later walked quickly from the room. I knew it wouldn’t take her all that long to get cleaned up.

“Do you think you can handle food?”

Silas shook his head. The blanket was pulled up to his chin. His tired eyes watched me, pleading with me for something. He was thinking way too hard.

“What do you need, kitty?” I took a seat on the edge of the bed.

“You.” The one word was whispered, but full of need.

“Always.”

I scooted closer, and Silas wrapped his body around me as well as he could with the blanket tucked around him. His arms held onto my leg in a death grip, his nose almost pressed up against me. I ran my hand through his hair, letting him take whatever affection he wanted from me.

“I’m so proud of you, Silas. Thank you for gifting me with your voice.”

Little did this creature know that he was capturing my heart day by day. I had never thought I’d be the type to settle down, but between him and Emily, I was viewing life differently. They were always in my thoughts, now.

“He trusts you,” Emily declared, standing in the doorway. Her hair was twisted into a braid over her shoulder, still dripping.

“Do you?”

“I kinda have to, don’t I?”

“No, honey. You don’t. I’m not going to force you. But I do keep my promises. I’ll do whatever it takes to show you that you can trust me, but I don’t expect it.”

She didn’t say anything for a moment. Instead, she walked to the bed and sat down, close to Silas. He peeked over his shoulder at her before stretching his legs out so one was touching her.
