For whatever reason they didn't recognize that this was Jesus. He asked them why they were so sad. In the text, we are told they related to Him what had happened and what their hopes were. But in their minds everything was lost and all hope was gone.

The text tells us that Jesus then began to open up the Scriptures to them and explain why the Messiah had to suffer. He went on to explain many wonderful truths that the prophets and law had said regarding the Messiah. What an experience that must have been - to have Jesus personally open the Scriptures to them. They later said that their hearts “did burn” as He spoke to them on the road.
