Father, Giver of life, you nourish and sustain us through the simplest of elements. The gifts you give us from the ground and the sky give us power and energy to bring forth new gifts from you, such as our daily deeds for our neighbor. Thanks be to you. Through your son, Jesus Christ, teach us to use this energy and power to help and heal those who need it. Inspire and empower us to share our food and resources as Jesus did. Help make our few loaves, or our crumbs even, bring life to the world. Holy Spirit, guide us and grant us wisdom in how we give and share. Lead us to give and share despite a lack of supply. Comfort us in our sacrifice, and give us courage to give even when we are in need. All for your name’s sake and our neighbor’s security. Amen.

Simple Steps to Practice Fasting and Feasting

When fasting, let conscience and liberty be your guide. Take into account time, manner, quality, conditions, age, and so forth. Be sensitive to your abilities and limits. If you have a medical condition and can’t fast for an entire day, fast for one meal or forgo an afternoon snack. Remember: consistency and regularity are the most important. Do what you can. But make sure to give what you don’t eat to someone in need!

At work, try buying lunch for someone soliciting or begging for change outside your building. If you’re free at home, take a nice meal to the homeless shelter, a new mom in the hospital, or a resident at a senior living community. Or buy groceries for college students so they’re not eating ramen noodles for months. Look around you and find someone in need.

Do you have something to celebrate? A work promotion? Your child’s birthday? The anniversary of buying your home? Celebrate it with others. Invite over friends, family, and neighbors. Crack open that really expensive bottle of wine and cook that perfect steak. Share the gifts God has given you with others while they share in the gifts God has given you.
