3 Guidelines for the Design of Novel Cleaning Processes

As presented in the literature review, supercritical fluids show a great potential for application in processes for cleaning porous materials. However, the use of supercritical fluids involves some technical challenges and limitations, and usually requires higher investment costs due to the need of high pressure equipment.

Therefore, the developed process involving cleaning porous materials using supercritical fluid should be extensively studied before implementation in industry-scale plants. Moreover, various aspects of process development have to be covered by the study to ensure that the novel process is efficient, economically justifiable and safe both for the environment and the porous material itself. For this purpose, a set of practical guidelines for the design of novel cleaning processes involving porous materials and supercritical fluids has been formulated and is presented in this work.

The guidelines are grouped in five parts and they should be considered in the proposed order:1.Identification of reference processes,
