Iron is an essential mineral that helps make several important proteins in the body, including hemoglobin and myoglobin, which help transport oxygen to the body’s tissues. You need an appropriate balance of iron in your body—too little may cause anemia and too much may be toxic—and although your body stocks iron, it loses about 10 percent of its stores each day.
