Chapter Seven

Brooke let Will lead her to his car and gave him the directions to her complex. He drove with one hand covering hers. Within minutes, they arrived. As he followed Brooke up the sidewalk to her flat, she was surprised to find her hand gravitating back toward his and how natural it felt when he closed his fingers around hers.

Each unit in Brooke’s complex had a separate entrance, like a duplex, so it wasn’t surprising to her that no one had noticed anything strange going on. No one was out, and there were no lights spilling through the cracks of the curtain-filled windows that faced the courtyard. Had anyone heard a disturbance, Brooke was sure the yard would have been filled with curious bystanders.

Heather was Brooke’s neighbor to the right, who was helpful when she needed a cup of flour to finish a recipe, but otherwise kept to herself. Heather was peeking out of her doorway when Brooke walked toward her door and called back to Tara that she had arrived. Her neighbor gave a small wave, telling Brooke to let her know if she needed anything. She moved aside as Tara bolted through the doorway and pounced on her friend with a full-body hug.

“I was so worried when I couldn’t get a hold of you! I thought maybe something happened to you. I had totally forgotten about your date. It’s such a mess in there,” Tara rambled on as the tears welled up in her eyes, “I’m really worried about Misty.”

Brooke trembled as she held her friend tight. “Misty’s probably just hiding. You know how she is. Come on, Tara, deep breaths, right?”

Tara took a deep breath in and wiped her tears. “You’re right, I’ve got this…”

“Good, lovey, cause the only one allowed to lose it is me,” Brooke joked as tears welled up in her eyes again. She made quick introductions between Will and Tara then started toward her flat.

“Wait a minute,” Will said as he pulled on Brooke’s hand, causing her to take a few steps back. He directed his question to Tara. “How long were you in there?”

“Long enough to see it was a mess. I called for the cat from the living room, and when she didn’t come out, I called Brooke then the police. I just got off the phone with them when you pulled up.”

Will directed his next comment to Brooke. “You’re not going in there first. You can come in after I take a look around. I’ll come get you when the coast is clear. You might want to avoid touching anything just in case the police want to take prints.”

Brooke took one look at Will’s face and knew there was no sense in arguing with him. He squeezed her hand one more time, and with a soft smile meant to comfort her, disappeared through the doorway.

He was gone only seconds before she heard sirens in the distance, and she was relieved when she saw his face poke back through the door to give her the all clear.
