Cherry and Ana spilled out onto the street five minutes later in a cacophony of laughter. The remainder of the time they spent in the gallery they had been pawing at one another playfully. Ana’s lips were constantly in Cherry’s ear while she whispered ridiculous jokes, causing them both to giggle. To any outsider – it looked like they were madly in love.

Cherry finally stopped laughing and sucked in the evening’s cool air. “I can’t believe you did that! That was amazing!”

Ana stopped laughing as well, and pulled Cherry in closely and whispered into her ear, “They’re still watching us. Shall we go for a walk?”

Cherry pulled back and looked deeply into Ana’s eyes, reminding herself that it was just for show. “Yes, absolutely,” she said, grabbing Ana’s hand and kissing her knuckles.

Ana wrapped an arm around Cherry and they strolled away from the gallery. Once out of sight, Cherry released Ana. She shook her hand as if something had singed it. Ana’s touch had burned and tingled.

Cherry stopped walking, causing Ana to halt and said, “Do you want to go somewhere for dinner? I mean, the night is young – especially since we spent almost no time in there.”

“Yes, definitely. Let’s get somewhere warm. It’s a lovely fall night, but it is brisk!” she cried, rubbing her arms and shivering slightly.

“I know just the place,” Cherry said, looping her arm into Ana’s.

Merely for body heat…

Riiiiiiiight…

They walked quickly down the street, and soon Cherry pulled Ana into a poorly lit restaurant with almost no signage.

“Where are we?” Ana asked, sniffing the air.

“We’re in a Pho House – technically, it’s called The Pho Spot.”

“Uh huh,” Ana murmured.

“Just trust me. Pretend you are on a food adventure,” Cherry suggested.

“Gladly,” Ana said, shivering slightly.

“Besides, Pho is soup – hot, spicy, umami soup. It’ll take the chill away.”

The hostess sat them in a dimly lit nook, and Cherry ordered hot tea and water for both of them. After she wandered away from their table, Cherry sat across from Ana, feeling nervous.

“Sooooo – are we going to talk about what just happened? You know, besides my excellent acting skills,” Ana asked.

Cherry felt a blush bloom across her face, and their waitress arrived with tea and water. “Do you need menus?”

“Umm, I’m not sure. Ana, are you going to trust my ordering skills?” Cherry asked.

“Yes, absolutely – you be my food guide,” Ana answered brightly.

“Let’s go with two number threes and two number seventeens.” The waitress nodded and they were left alone.

Cherry shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “First, I want to apologize. I should’ve warned you that we were walking into a hornet nest of lesbian drama. So, I’m deeply sorry. DEEPLY. SORRY.”

“Thanks, but I wasn’t looking for an apology. I’d love to hear some back story. Obviously, Cruella DeVille is an ex-girlfriend. I got that. I’m looking for some context.”

Cherry shifted again and then let go of a long sigh. “Cruella – that was Christine Carole – loving that nick name by the way. We dated for six months.
