RESTING PLACES
When we are on pilgrimage the times of rest and recovery are part of the joy, both during the day and when the day ends. During the day, we scan the path ahead; at night we review the day and learn its lessons. Again, the rhythm of movement and rest is part of the joy of travelling purposefully but without rushing. It’s an example we would usually love to take back into the rest of our lives.
Good God,
this is tough.
My legs ache, my mouth is dry;
the path is always up, never down.
Can tomorrow be a rest day?
But who said the Christian way was easy?
Certainly not the young man on the cross.
Some of the journey of life is hard;
some is a plod;
and some is a dance.
Strengthen my resolve to seize the day
walk the extra mile
and receive your blessing,
which I ask in Jesus’ name.
Gracious God
in you is our rest.
Thank you for the rhythms of the journey,
times of effort and times of relaxation,
times of encounter and times of solitude.
May our lives increasingly echo
the rhythms of your love
and the beauty of your presence
until the pilgrimage is complete
and we rest eternally in you.
Now that the sun has set,
I sit and rest, and think of you.
Give my weary body peace.
Let my legs and arms stop aching,
let my nose stop sneezing,
let my head stop thinking,
let me sleep in your arms.
African Dinka prayer
O Lord, you have searched me out and known me;
you know my sitting down and my rising up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You mark out my journeys and my resting place
and are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
You encompass me behind and before
and lay your hand upon me.
Psalm 139. 1-4 (Common Worship Psalter)
Lord, it is night.
The night is for stillness
Let us be still in the presence of God.
It is night after a long day.
What has been done has been done;
what has not been done has not been done;
let it be.
The night is dark.
Let our fears of the darkness
of the world and of our own lives
rest in you.
The night is quiet.
Let the quietness of your peace enfold us,
all dear to us,
and all who have no peace.
The night heralds the dawn.
Let us look expectantly to a new day,
new joys,
new possibilities.
In your name we pray.
Anon.
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for it is you Lord, only, who make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4.8
