Chapter 16
“We’re in another country?”
She asked the question, incredulous, even though it was obvious where they were. She’d seen the postcards. They definitely weren’t in Key West anymore. “I know, I know,” she said when Seven opened his mouth to answer. “But how? We need passports, customs clearance.”
“I took care of all that while you were asleep. Come.” Seven swept her forward. “Meet my father and brother.”
She suddenly felt self-conscious, too argumentative, too rumpled and casual to meet anyone new after days at sea.
“Winston Carmichael, Simon Carmichael. This is Bailey Hughes. A new friend from America.”
“Friend, eh?” The older man chuckled then reached across his son to pull Bailey in for a hug. “Welcome to the island, girl.”
His brother was not so easy. “You have to do better than that, brother.” He looked her over with frank masculine interest, which seemed especially primal with his thick beard growing without any sort of shape or definition. “If she’s just your friend, then that means she can make new friends here.” Simon looked over his shoulder at his brother with a grin. “You look tired after your long travel, empress. Come rest yourself.”
Bailey shook her head. If she still looked tired after all those naps she’d taken on the boat, there was something seriously wrong with her. But she allowed Simon to usher her toward the path through the bushes.
“Don’t spin her head with your foolishness, man!” Seven called out from the pier.
Bailey looked over her shoulder and saw him talking with the yacht’s crew. She stopped. “No offence, gentlemen, but I’m not going anywhere without him.”
“So he’s your man, then?” Simon’s eyes danced behind his round glasses.
Somehow she thought he knew about her situation with Seven and was just playing with her. “It wouldn’t be polite for me to leave him, when he’s the one who brought me here.”
“Leave Seven’s woman alone.” The older man playfully slapped his son on the leg with the flat side of his machete. “You have your own piece of business to take care of here.”
“That’s old business.” Simon shrugged dismissively, but he released Bailey’s arm and waited for Seven to catch up with them.
The crewmen walked back onto the yacht, smoking cigarettes and talking quietly to themselves as Seven walked toward Bailey and the two men.
“Is Mama home?” Seven asked.
Simon shook his head. “She’s still at work.”
Seven nodded. He carried two bags with him, including her red overnight case. Bailey looked pointedly at him, then at the bags.
“Later,” he murmured.
Later? What did that mean? Not only had the man kidnapped her, he’d brought her to another country, a place where she knew no one and was completely at his mercy. But, watching the easy camaraderie between Seven and his family, and both men’s disarming grins, which were so much like Seven’s, she knew that on this island, nothing would happen to her that she did not want. She felt safe.
Bailey flicked a glance at Seven, who walked with an even more relaxed stride, body easy and unencumbered in khaki shorts and a plain white T-shirt.
