Fred got me to Mac’s before he opened on Saturday, so I could let him in on everything and get used to the music in this room. As Fred let me out of the car, he told me he was proud of the woman I’m becoming and said Dad would be too. Dad’s supposed to be here tonight, but I’m not sure with all the crazy that’s gonna go down.

One of the waitresses lets me in and I drop my bag on the bar and take a seat. I know Mac’s here, I can hear him messing around. “Hey, Mac, come out here and talk to a girl for a sec,” I shout so he can hear me.

“Mouth, is that you?” Mac yells back.

“Yep. Got a second to talk?”

“Yeah, uh, I’ll be right out.” Mac comes walking out with a case of beer in his hands. “What can I do ya for? You’re early.”

“Yeah, well, I need to get used to the music from disc since I can’t play right now.”

“M’kay, so you want to get a feel for the stage. Makes sense.”

“Kind of, I also need to chat with you about my music tonight.”

Mac finishes putting some beer in the fridge and hooks up a keg before walking over to me. “Want a soda?”

“Just water or tea for me tonight. Thanks.”

Mac hands me a bottle of water. “How you been feelin’, and the boys?”

“They’re idiots, but you know teenage boys.” I smile. “As for me, I am dealing the best I can.”

Mac chuckles and pours himself a beer. “Ah, that’s relationships for ya.”

“Speaking of relationships and my music...”

Mac raises a brow at me and I continue to let him in on what’s going on tonight.

Mac’s watching me with his fingers in a steeple. “I’ll do what I can to help, but you know you’re taking a big risk. If that family finds out what’s going on, they’ll hide him and paint you up just like your mother.”

“Mac, don’t you know me any better than that? How about I go through my set, then you let me know what you think?”

“Go for it, Mouth.”

I go through my nine-piece set, then make my way back over to the bar where Mac is standing with his back to me. “So, what’d you think?”

“I think there won’t be a dry eye or seat in the house because they're either going to cry their eyes out or piss themselves.”

“Really?”

“You know Sarah quit on me, right?” Mac asks, rubbing his hands together.

“You serious? Why?”

“Decided to go out to Tennessee and see what she can do.”

“She has the voice, but she could have given ya some kind of notice.”

“Nah, she finally got the money for a bus ticket and left me a note on the bar with a bottle of eighteen-year-old scotch.”

“So, what are you doing now?” I ask.

“We were using the jukebox, but now I’m thinking,” he pauses, “you can’t work for Fred, right?”

“I’m down for a few months at the very least.”

“Well, why don’t you come work for me?”

“I’m too young to serve alcohol, Mac.
