Figures and numbers were exactly what the doctor ordered for me right now. I sat alone in the office, perusing the monthly bank statements for the business and reconciling the figures with my own records. It was painstaking work but I needed this distraction today. Yesterday at the beach had been quite a bittersweet experience for me. On the one hand I had spent lots of time with Jay and had been really happy to see that our friendship seemed to be truly on the mend. On the other hand things with Cam were becoming increasingly difficult. The sex was still fucking fantastic, but he was becoming more demanding of my time and displaying signs of jealousy now and then. I had noticed him sitting apart from everyone else for most of the day yesterday, staring at Jay and I as we played in the water so intensely I thought we would have spontaneously combusted from the impact. Our heated exchange later only helped to confirm my suspicions. That could not be good. It meant that I would have to break off our arrangement soon and I didn’t want that. I hadn’t had nearly enough of him yet, but regardless of that I couldn’t afford for him to start thinking he owned me or that this was a relationship type situation.

So last night I hadn’t called him, hadn’t picked up the phone when he had called me. I decided that maybe we should step back a bit for a couple of days and put things into perspective. I was not his girl. He had no claims on me. I would not allow another man to dictate my every move ever again. Daniel had been so controlling, so consumed with jealousy that he had effectively driven a wedge between my friends and I, even between my parents and I. I shuddered to think of anything like that happening with Cam.

I shook off the thought and continued to work meticulously when there was a soft knock on the door. It must be someone I knew because the security officer now stationed outside would not have let a stranger get this far without notifying me. I switched my computer to the surveillance camera screen and saw Cam’s tall body lounging outside my door. Oh shit!

It was useless to pretend I wasn’t in there so I took a deep breath and opened the door. “Cam, hey. What are you doing here?” I asked, aiming to sound casual.

He didn’t respond but his green gems grabbed my gaze and held on for dear life. I was lost in their depths as he took a step toward me. I backed up, surprised by his action. He stepped toward me again and I backed up in response, our little dance continued until my thighs hit the edge of my desk and I was well and truly trapped between a rock and hard place.

Cam reached behind him to shut the door and bolt the lock. I swallowed convulsively but couldn’t break eye contact.
