PITCHER SAGE

Family: Lamiaceae (mint family)

Also called: White pitcher sage or woodbalm

Scientific name: Lepechinia calycina (Benth.) Munz

Height: Usually 1–4', occasionally up to 7'.

Leaves: Deciduous, opposite, the blade 1.5–5" long, fairly narrow to oval, long-haired, sometimes with additional shorter glandular hairs or sessile glands; margins smooth, scalloped, or toothed.

Flowers: 1–1.2" long; sepals fused into a 5-lobed, yellowish green, hairy tube with conspicuous raised veins, inflating into a brown or reddish, more or less spherical, longitudinally pleated “balloon” up to 1.2" long as the fruit matures; petals fused into a 2-lipped tube, upper lip 4-lobed, lower lip a bit longer and only slightly lobed, white or pale lavender; stamens 4; ovary superior.

Blooms April through June.
