WHAT IT DOES BEST

Chamomile is always appropriate in any situation with a lot of heat. In Peru a few years ago, I didn’t wear enough sunscreen on the beach, near the equator at noon toward the end of their summer. I was super pink. Chamomile to the rescue! I picked up a healthy bunch at the market and made a compress, which relieved the pain and inflammation. It’s also great for inflamed emotions: chamomile is the plant for the person who gets red-faced and veiny when mad.

Chamomile is also my favorite remedy for what I call the “Leave me alone! Don’t leave me alone!” feelings. I can count on chamomile to relax and relieve the tension between this competing desire to be cared for and to turn people away. When feelings of anxiety spread to my digestive tract chamomile is in order. Ordinarily chamomile has a pleasantly floral-apple profile, but if you let it steep longer, the bitterness comes out. That bitter flavor can help relieve stagnant digestion triggered by feelings of nervousness or anxiety.
