Fig. 6.35 Sand dunes, ripples, ice and dust-devils . At the top and bottom of this image are small ripples of sand on Mars, their south-facing slopes highlighted with frost. (The scene is in the southern hemisphere of Mars so south slopes face away from the Sun.) A large sand dune cuts diagonally across the image. Mysterious dark shapes lie along the uppermost ridge of the sand dune, where the frost has disappeared and loosened its grip on the sand particles. One of the shapes is that of a huge salamander.
