Chapter Seven

“And then,” Mark said between bites, “the lady and her broom almost killed me.”

Zincor laughed, and Bazel said, “You did very well, Mark. A night’s sound sleep and you’ll be ready to get the third key.”

Mark’s handful of bread stopped halfway to his mouth. The third key. Dressing like a girl.

“Are you sure you bought everything I told you to?” Bazel asked.

“Yes,” said Mark, stuffing the bread in his mouth.

“Two sets of clothes?”

Mark chewed and nodded.

“Boy’s and girl’s?”

Mark swallowed. “Yes. I got everything.”

“A red dress and yellow shoes?” Zincor asked.

Mark glared. “Yes, yes, yes.”

“And a bonnet you really like?” Zincor teased.

“Zincor,” Bazel scolded.

“Sorry,” said Zincor.

Mark didn’t think Zincor looked sorry. Not at all. Mark frowned and went back to his meal. He was glad when the sun went down, and he could catch up on his sleep.

The next morning, Bazel woke him saying, “It’s time. Can’t be late for school. We don’t want you to draw any more attention than necessary. Change into your disguise.”

Mark stepped away where no one could see him, and when he returned, he wore yellow leotards, yellow shoes, and a short red dress with bright orange trim. He held his yellow bonnet in his hand. He wouldn’t put that on until he had to.

“You look nice,” Zincor said with a straight face.

Mark’s eyes narrowed. “I’m doing this for you, you know.”

“I know.” Zincor’s lower lip quivered. “But you look so… so… funny!” He burst out laughing.

“Zincor,” Bazel scolded again.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Zincor walked to the rear of the cave, pressing the back of one fist against his mouth.

“Do you remember everything we’ve told you, Mark?” Bazel asked.

“I do,” Mark answered, eager to get underway. Perhaps in the city, where no one knew him, he wouldn’t feel as ridiculous as he did standing in front of Zincor and Bazel.

“Be sure,” Bazel said sternly. “This trip will be much more difficult than your first trip. You’ll have to convince the teacher you’re a new student. It won’t take her long to figure out you’re not a new student. So grab the key the first chance you get.”

“I will. Don’t worry, after being stuck under Zincor’s bed for a whole night, and having some cleaning lady attack me with her broom, and living through a dust storm, this will be easy.”

Bazel offered a small grin. “I hope so.”

Zincor rejoined them, wearing a serious face. “And be back as soon as you can,” he said. “No more overnights in the palace. Bazel and I couldn’t sleep either, worrying about you.”

“I’ll be back. Don’t worry. Goodbye.”

Mark walked down the mountain, putting on his bonnet along the way and trying to imagine the things he should do differently as a girl. The time for thinking ended, though, when he walked through the city gate and headed toward the left side of the palace where Bazel told him he’d find the girls’ school.

Mark knew it wouldn’t be easy to convince anyone he met that he was a girl, and the
