Responsive Writing

This is writing that answers the asked and implied questions and meets the stated and unstated requirements. It is also timely, considerate, and complete.

Consider the case of a proposal. To be responsive, a proposal must do many things. It must follow all the directions. It must be 100 percent compliant. It must be easy to follow since it should be logical, organized, and written in clear, plain English. It must arrive on time. The solutions offered must align with the requirements in the solicitation documents.

Responsible Writing

It is essential to deliver complete, accurate documents in the required timeframe. These documents must be thoroughly researched or vetted, and properly referenced with complete citations and full credit given to sources.

Requirements-Driven Writing

It is tempting to offer more than what is being sought, but better to follow directions, request clarifications, and don’t do things that might indicate a customer or other entity doesn’t know what it wants. This is not a case where it is better to “ask forgiveness later rather than ask for permission now.”

Adding what is often called “fluff,” and sometimes known as “spin,” is not generally a way to demonstrate that you are requirements-driven.
