I tried to forget about it and collect some more pigeon data, but I couldn’t focus. TJ’s angry face kept appearing in front of me. His expression right before he threw the cards reminded me of myself when people want to talk about my legs. It makes me angry-scared, like I wanted to yell to push it all away, except I never can. What is that kid’s deal, anyway? Why did he even join the Squad if he doesn’t care about it?

Mr. Grump surprised me by getting up and walking over to me. He introduced himself as Mr. Garamelli. (Italian—I knew it!) “That kid ain’t nice. Not like you,” he said. “And you’re right I shouldn’t be kicking at pigeons. They may be annoying, but that doesn’t mean they deserve a boot to the head.” With that, he tipped his hat and kept going, right on out of the park. I wonder where to—a bar, a sandwich shop, to meet with other mob members? Or maybe he’s on his way to a big family gathering, with lots of grandchildren? Wherever it is, I hope it’s someplace nice.
