In his own chambers the Khan was not yet asleep. His mother, dressed as always in her white robes, had come to tuck him in—as he insisted she do every night. She was trying to reason with him.
“You can't marry her,” she said.
“Why not?” he whined. “She's a princess! And besides, I don't have a single other greeneyed wife.”
“Listen to me, Khoonbish,” said his mother firmly.
“Mother, you know I hate it when you call me that.” The Khan tried to stamp his foot, but he was lying down and only succeeded in kicking the covers.
“You can't marry her,” she repeated, “even if she does have green eyes and eats like a horse, because she is not of age, and now everybody knows it.”
“Who put that blasted flower behind her ear?” cried the Khan. “I will dismember her personally!”
“It doesn't matter who it was,” replied his mother wearily. “The point is that she has not yet been touched by the moon. According to tribal law, she is still a child! If you marry her before her time, you will be breaking the law.”
“I don't care about the law!” raged the Khan.
“Yes, you do,” said his mother sternly. “The tribes will rebel. This is one rule you simply cannot break. You have to wait—or win Castlemar some other way. Meanwhile, you have obligations to fulfill.”
The Khan looked as if he cared not one bit for his obligations, or about any promises he might have made. He was hardly an honorable man; nor was he a patient one. “I can't wait,” he said. “Her father might come back before she comes of age.”
“Then you will have to return her,” said his mother.
“I will never give her up,” vowed the Khan. “I will have her, one way or another!”
Gathering up her white robes, his mother left the room, closing the door firmly behind her. Not for the first time did she wonder what kind of man she had brought into the world.
