Chapter Twelve

Hailey

“Does anyone else find it weird and creepy that we’re visiting a murder scene at school? In a refrigerator no less?” Noah climbed the marble steps to the student center, closed for the holidays but decorated to the nines nonetheless.

“I’ve been to worse scenes.” Casper’s gaze scanned the area behind them before she rolled one shoulder.

“At least it’s not underwater.” The more psychics Hailey interacted with, the more she understood they existed as a culture unto themselves.

Noah and Casper seemed to have ridden the same wavelength concerning worldviews since their first meeting. With the school closed until the new semester, he resided at Casper’s home. By outward appearances, they hadn’t taken their relationship to the next level.

Casper’s guardian per school records, maintained the day-to-day operations and oversaw the home’s security. Sarah hadn’t mentioned issues over the new arrangement, which meant they’d accepted the shifter on some level.

In part, she credited Casper’s wary status to the number and severity of upheavals in her young life. Another factor included lack of leisure time to develop relationships.

While Hailey’s own life also suffered drastic changes, it was balanced by a stable and nurturing relationship with her mother and friends.

“This is the place I’d thought to make my mark in the world, or at least start. Not as a shifter, but as a person, an individual. Instead, it’s changed me in ways I never could have imagined. Not that I regret meeting you all, just that people had to die to bring us together.”

“Creepy or not, this is my best chance of connecting with Melody since this is where she died.” Hailey watched Casper phase through the heavy glass and wood door then open it from the inside. Each filed in behind Trenton.

Casper’s mood had improved with the relay of Nicholai’s message that Duncan hadn’t destroyed the amulet. At least she had hope.

Melody Gingham had nothing.

Through the open expanse to the cafeteria, they remained on alert. An atmosphere of death hung in the air and contrasted the abundance of Christmas decorations mocking all good things in life.

The kitchen appeared as if nothing tragic had taken place. According to Clannahan, and in concurrence with everything she now saw, his men had moved the student’s body and staged the accident scene down to the last detail.

Hailey heard sobs as soon as the fridge’s thick insulated metal door opened. She couldn’t see the spirit, but felt the student’s despair with each choking breath.

“Melody? Melody Gingham? Can we talk to you for a few moments?” It wasn’t the first spirit Hailey interviewed, but it was the first kid. A fact which somehow turned everything upside down in her head.

“You can see me?”

“No, but I can hear you. My associates and I want to bring your killer to justice, but we need your help.”

“I didn’t know. I swear I didn’t.”

“Didn’t know what, hon? That they intended to kill Casper?” She hoped the spirit saw her hand motion and would come out into the kitchen proper.

Spirits didn’t feel changes in heat, cold, or pain.
