“Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” ~ Aristotle

Relief skittered all along her body and enveloped her in a tight hug when she stepped into her house.

“I need to make a call to my friend Ligi.”

He raised an eyebrow at her.

“She’ll be worried I haven’t spoken to her.” It wouldn’t have surprised Carissa if Ligi was already sitting on the couch waiting for her to get back to town.

“I have a few to make myself.”

“The study is through there.” She pointed to the double doors on her left. “I’ll chat in the kitchen.”

He nodded. She watched as he walked away, admiring his perfect buns, then dialed Ligi’s number. The beeps sounded and then Ligi’s sexy, breathy voice instructed the caller to leave her a short message.

“Hey Ligi, I know it’s late, but I just wanted to call—”

“Carissa, where the hell have you been? I left messages on your cell.”

“Oh, you picked up.”

“Of course I picked up. You not answering just doesn’t happen. I thought the worst.”

“I’m sorry. Things kind of got a little crazy.”

“That’s a poor excuse, girlfriend, and you know it.”

She hung her head at her friend’s words. How would she explain? Even recalling it all herself sounded ridiculous. Logically, she should skim over it, but one thing she never did with Ligi was leave out details, no matter how crazy. But this was different, and dragging her friend into danger and her nightmare was not an option.

“I’m waiting. Explain!” Her friend’s demand ricocheted around her brain.

What to tell, what to tell? Go for safe—Xen is safe. She let out a deep breath. “I met someone and I’m kind of stuck on him.”

“Hold on. I’m coming right over and I’m bringing a bottle of wine.”

“Ligi!”

“Should I get some takeout?”

“Ligi, he’s here with me now.”

“OMG, you’re banging him. My girl has finally done the deed and it looks like she’s hooked.”

Carissa let out a laugh. “Hooked, yes.”

“Tell me, is he hot and sexy, and does he have one of those sex-drenched voices that make you want to fall on your knees and maybe do something for him while you’re down there?”

“Ligi.” Her face heated at Ligi’s words.

“Wait till I tell Kelly.”

“No. I’ll never hear the end of it.” She slapped her forehead.

“So does the man have a name?”

“Yes he does. Xen.”

“Oooh, that is sexy. Sounds familiar though.”

She rubbed the back of her neck. It was time to end the call before she spilled everything. “Listen Ligi, I’ve got to go.”

“You owe me dinner, wine and details.”

“Soon. I promise.”

“Send me a photo.”

“No. That’s creepy.”

“Is not. Get with the times. Everyone’s sending selfies with their boyfriends.”

“Goodnight, Ligi.”

“Spoilsport. Goodnight, girlfriend. Enjoy your sexy tumble.”

“You are going to give me grief, aren’t you?”

“You better believe it. Mwah.”

The kiss through the phone’s speaker reverberated in her ear.

“Right back at you,” Carissa said and hung up. She rolled her eyes towards the ceiling. Forgive me for omitting details, girlfriend, but you need to be safe.

She grabbed a glass of water and drank deeply. She went to the pantry and pulled out some crackers.
