Declan stood beside me as I opened my locker and pulled out my books for our new history class. New term meant new classes. Now we only had history and orchestra together. Leaning in, he smiled at me. With the red door open, it partially hid us from view. In a swift move, Declan placed a peck on my cheek.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist.” His happy grin stretched from ear to ear.
I shook my head, unable to stop my own smile. Damn it, I liked him. As much as I wanted not to like him or to deny the feelings churning inside me, I couldn’t.
“Come on, let’s get to history, Princess.” His nickname now made my heart flutter.
The door shut with a rattle and I turned, Declan right behind me as I went toward our class. In the distance, I saw Quinn. We’d only hung out once over break. It was weird not seeing her much. But then again, Lexi had been popping up with her more often than not lately. Quinn stood, brown hair falling on her shoulders, chatting with Phillip and laughing. My brother reached out and put his arm around her shoulder, giving her a quick and playful squeeze. She looked as if she might melt from his touch.
“You know, if I had to guess, I’d say Quinn’s interested in your brother.” Declan nodded to where they stood, a slight smile on his lips. “Not me.”
I sighed. “She likes you both. Phillip’s a little slow on the uptake, and I don’t think he knows what he wants anyway.”
“Well, maybe someone needs to help him catch on a little quicker. Then you wouldn’t have to feel guilty for . . . anything.”
I looked up at him, then dropped my gaze. “I don’t.”
That was a lie. Knowing Quinn liked him, that they’d already been on one date, added to her being my bestie, made it super complicated. Starting something with Declan was playing with fire—in more ways than one. I couldn’t lose focus on what he stood to take away from me.
His head tilted to the side, he looked at me as if to say, really?
“Okay. So . . . maybe I do feel guilty. I can’t help it. She’s my best friend, and I feel like I’m doing something behind her back.”
He nodded, an I-told-you-so look on his face.
We walked past the pair, Phillip’s eyes met mine, then quickly looked back to Quinn. She didn’t notice us. Her eyes were firmly locked on my brother.
How could he seriously not be sure if Quinn liked him? She really couldn’t be more obvious.
I glanced back before I stepped through the classroom door and went to a desk on the side of the room, past Jenna sitting in the front row. She smiled when she saw Declan and me. Mr. Ferngren was setting up the Smartboard for something. He was by far my favorite history teacher ever. He made it fun and exciting.
A loud buzz signaling the start of class rang through the halls.
